On October 13, 2009, the Housing Rights Center and the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of Santa Monica resident Nadia Fino charging that her housing providers discriminated against her on the basis of disability by failing to accept her Federal Section 8 Housing Choice Program voucher in partial payment of her rent. On July 15, 2009 HRC filed a landmark lawsuit in the Central District charging that the emergency shelter system in Los Angeles County “intentionally and blatantly” discriminates against homeless people with disabilities who use service animals. Zerne et al. v. Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, et al., Case No. CV09-05146. HRC is joined by co-counsel Disability Rights Legal Center in pursuing the case, which raises claims under the Americans with Disabilities Act and Rehabilitation Act as well as the Fair Housing Act and various state statutes.
